Consumer Law Complaints Database

Ash St. Publication

In a pre-Christmas gift from the Productivity Commission, its draft Consumer Law and Administration Report is now available. Some significant reforms are canvassed including:

  • developing a national database of consumer complaints and incidents (both product safety and general consumer protection), aspects of which may be publicly available; and
  • increasing penalties for breach of the Australian Consumer Law so they are in line with penalties for breaches of competition (anti-trust) laws – i.e. the greater of $10 million, three times the benefit obtained from the breach or 10% of turnover for the preceding 12-months.

The last date for submissions is Monday 23 January 2017.
